The dip stick is on the otherside. Will the stock oil pan from a 70s 400 block fit in a c4 or will I need some kind of aftermarket oil pan?
*Edit: If a 350 oil pan would bolt to a 400 I wonder if I could weld the dipstick part of the oil pan from the 400 onto the 350 (and delete the original drivers side protrusion on the 350 oil pan by cutting it off the 400 and welding it onto the 350 oil pan).

I have the early SB Vette road race pan with the trap door that I will part with. Its for the early blocks with the left side (drivers side) dipstick & it holds more oil than a stock pan.
That's correct. The earlier blocks have a hole in the block and a bulge where the pan meets the block in the area of the dipstick tube. The pan must have also have this bulge to seal the block.

Right, that buldge is the part I was talking about cutting off the 400 pan and welding to the 350 pan, but it sounds like the stock 400 pan will work anyway. As soon as I finish getting this 350 out of my car I will compare the two oil pans. I was just thinking ahead of any incompatabilities I may run into. I know about the 400 being externally balanced and the steam holes, plus a few other things. I thought maybe it was oversight no one ever mentioned needing a different oil pan.
