I had a close call today (93 LT1). Just got off an LA freeway cruising to my turnoff doing about 60. Went right by my turnoff, good thing there was little traffic. Hit the brakes and just get a loud hissing sound. Managed to get home slowly with very high pedal effort. Sounds like my booster went bad. Is this a tough job? Any recommendations, original equipment or aftermarket?
Glad you dodged the bullet. Sounds like the booster. Had mine go in a similar fashion years ago had to pull on the bottom of the steering wheel to get enough leverage to hit the pedal hard enough to stop in time. I went back with the stock PBR myself...the booster was and easy change...just an hour or two as I recall.
Same thing happened to me on the highway in my '93. The "hissing" sound was ruptured diaphram in brake booster. Below is the thread I started back when I had no experience changing a booster. You will need 1/4" rachet and lots of extensions to get the 2 nuts off the booster above the brake pedal. This IS the hardest part of this job.
Here is the best "no charge" hint you will ever get:
Remove the knee bolster under the steering wheel and the large square metal plate under that(4 bolts). If you do this, you will have straight visibility to the 2 booster nuts. This is an extra 5 minutest of work that will probably save you an hour or so trying to get those 2 nuts off and then back on(especially the **** nut one on the right side). If you do this, there is no need to remove the drivers seat as some will suggest.
