I have a budget of $5000. I have the choice as of right now a zz4 base for $3300 using same intake, well except probably put edlebrock manifold and runners on it vs having my engine rebuilt. Have no idea how much to look at for cost on having it rebuilt, but i want to have some performance added to it. Would like to get up around 300 hp, somewhere in that area.
yeah, i have a mechanic who said he would drop an engine in for $450, but I'd have to go to someone else to have the rebuild done, so i dont know what it would cost?
I just got a estimate last month on having my L98 rebuilt to stock. Both shops were around $1,600 with me doing the pull an install myself, so add your $450.00 to that an what ever performance parts you want and you should have a idea what it will cost...WW
With a ZZ4 (or any GM crate motor) you get a warranty that will be much better than what a local machine shop can offer. IF you install the stock TPI you will lose some of the 335 HP advertised by GM.
The best thing is that you get a brand new engine with all brand new parts. Forged crank, good pistons and rods and everything is set up and ready to run.
You can recover some of the cost by selling the intake manifold, the water pump and distributor.
You might check out the GM Parts Fast Burn 385 too. It's the ZZ4 with a bigger cam and Fast Burn heads with 2" intake valves and LT4 valve springs. 385HP and 385 ft-lbs of torque.
If you can score a ZZ4 long block for $3300, go for it! Summit Racing shows them for about $4200 shipped.
