I have an 88 that the 3rd brake has quit working. I removed the unit and opened it up to change the bulbs ,It looks like it is a complete unit as the bulbs look like they are not removeable. Has anyone changed theirs ?It the unit a dealer item ? Thanks for any imput ..
on my 86 there were 4 halogen bulbs.I believe they are #891. They are removeable and expensive. About 10-12 dollars a piece. I ended up changing all 4 at the same time after resoldering a couple of the sockets. Still working perfect.

Ok ,I bought new bulbs after work today and installed them . i hit brake pedal and nothing happened. oh boy here we go!!! I got out my multimeter and checked for power, nothing. no power at unit ,then i tracked wires to plug no power there .acording to shop manual it points to the brakelight switch, which is weird because the four lower brake lights work fine Has anyone had this problem ???
The main brake lights and the third brake light are controlled by the same switch but each controlled separately within the switch....so one set of lights can work while the other is inoperative. The switch is readily available at most parts places and is not too expensive. Remove the cover above the brake pedal and you should see the switch.

Well I'm happy to report that the switch was bad. What a pain trying to get under the dash, but it's all done , first nice day , it's time to go for the first ride this spring !!!
