This past dec. I got an 84 corvette for my birthday from my boyfriend who had it before. And I love driving it around, but there's a problem.
When your driving it around and hit a rough spot in the road or a bump. The dash goes out like completely you don't see anything. And after awhile it comes back on.
I was wondering if this was a problem with my display or a ground wire or something.
Could be a ground, but it also could be that the solder joints are starting to break on the circuit board. Im having the same problem with my 89, but it doesn't happen often enough yet to send my cluster in. If you send it into the company at the link at the bottom they are having a sale right now an instead of $225.00 they will overhaul the whole cluster for $185.00. This sale is on until June so if you find out you need a rebuild, send it in before then, Im told this company does excellent work..The ground wire on my 89 is on the back of the drivers side head, it may be the same with your 84 but Im not sure...Good Luck...WW

I have a similar problem with my 89's digital cluster.
Sometimes the right side gauges are too dim, thumping with my fist will brighten them back up.
Sometimes the left side will go black - thumping does no good, but driving over tracks or potholes will set them right again.
This has been going on for years.
I had an 84. The ground is behind the left side head. My ground was loose and would cause the dash to go black.
I am heaving similiar problems, intermitten complete loss of dash. I am confused about location of the ground to check. When everyone is refering to left (drivers) side head. Where is this ground. I am trying to find it to check.

Tony,
Sounds more like the bulb and/or bulb sockets connections are poor intermittent....replace the bulb and bulb sockets.
with BADDUCK if everything goes black and the both turn signals come on at the same time when everthing else is "blank"
OP's issue sounds like a bad ground...most bad ground connections are within the cluster it self or with the cluster's main connector. Remove the cluster and clean the pins and connections and ensure they are fully seated before chasing elusive engine compartment grounding points.
