tranny problem

i have an 89 corvette with the auto tranny. the shifter will go to 2nd gear but will not click into first gear.. ive searched on here to try to find the problem but didnt find anything.. what could be causing the issue?? the car has first but the wont let it what do you say manually shift it into first.

Also see if your shift boot is keeping you from getting into 1st.No kidding!! the original one in my 91 was so tight I could'nt shift down to 1st gear.

I agree. I have an 87 and the boot is old and hard. Have to jam the shifter into 1st and watch that it doesn't vibrate out.

If the boot isn't obstructing the shifter, reach under the DS about mid-door and feel for where the shifter cable connects to the shifter lever comming out of the A4. Here the nut can be loosened and the shifter position adjusted slightly.
