I've got what appears to be a bad leak coming from the rack & pinion unit on my 88 convertible. My local repair shop (which has been very reasonable in the past) said that the best price that they can find for the unit at any of the nearby stealerships is appx $500, and (correctly) suggested that I try to find a better price online. This leads me to the two questions with which I need your help.
1. Does anyone happen to know what the AC Delco part number is for the Z52 package steering unit (2 turns lock to lock).
2. Has anyone used the remanufactured unit from MidAmerica, Ecklers etc. and had any good (or bad) experience with it. Normally I would go with the AC Delco part, but times being what they are I need to save the $$$ if I can. The remanufatured unit is less than 1/2 the price.
Any help with this would really be appreciated.
I recall seeing NOS racks on CorvetteRecycling's site (one of the forum sponsors) for something like $250 but not sure what years they have them for.
Another possible route is to contact Turn One ( http://www.turnone-steering.com/ ) and talk with Jeff. They have a very good reputation in the racing section and elsewhere for their work rebuilding pumps and racks. I have one of their rebuilt racing pumps and it works very well. I'm pretty sure they do rebuilds on racks as well but no clue what the cost would be.
