Default LT1 internally balanced?

My Helms manual goes out of its way to explain replacing the hub on to the crank in EXACTLY the position it came off. Same for the pulley/balancer going back on the hub in the same position it came off. I assuming they would have the same recommendation for replacing the flywheel. This, in their words, is to assure proper balancing of the engine as it was set up from the factory.

But I've also heard that the LT1 is internally balanced and that it makes no difference where the hub/balancer assembly is positions as they are neutral balance.

So which is it? Internally balanced or externally balanced (like most engines)?

The LT1 is internally balanced on the balancer side with a small weight added to the balancer to fine tune the balance on that end but only in rare cases. Most LT1s do not have the small weight in the balancer. The flywheel end of the engine is externally balanced with weight on the flywheel.

The pully/balancer can only go on the hub ONE WAY!! by design. So that statement in the manual is correct. Well, there are a lot of correct statements..........

Actually the hub/balancer can go on in any of 360 ways...1 way per degree. The balancer goes on the hub in only one way (per the marks). is that what you meant.

My question relates to the location of the hub/balancer assembly on the crank. Helms must be incorrect. I put it back on the way it came off, so I should be fine...I was just curious.

What got me going on this was that there is no keyway on the crank or hub, it's just pressed on. Through me off.
