After getting the car out of storage, I decided to spend the day yesterday getting my 91 ready for the season. Drained the oil, no problem, but the filter (ac454) wouldnt budge.
Tried a cap wrench, tried a strap wrench, but that started crushing the filter. Tried tapping with a hammer/screwdriver but no use. Couldn't get a toothed wrench around it because of the clearance.
Finally tried the big screwdriver through the filter trick, but that wound up just bending the filter and making a big hole in the filter as I turned it.
Any other tricks??? ... The clearance is terrible with the shorter filter. I'm so disgusted that I can't get this loose and I really hate to pay to have it flat bedded to the shop for this.
spray something on it a couple of times a day for a day, it will come off, then make sure you only hand tighten it next time, and pre oil the seal.
good luck.
don't mess too much with it any more until penatrated or you will have a bigger mess with less mass to work with.
- you just cant believe how important that is - back in 1989, i had a 69 coupe, and went to change the oil shortly after i bought the car. well from the door jam sticker, it indicated it was recently changed at some quick lube place. i went thru the same thing - couldn't get the filter off. after several hours, and destroying the filter it came off. i noted the seal was bone dry. what i had to do to get the damn thing off was to completely rip off the filter case and get down to the screw on mounting plate. then, i stuck two 1/4 inch (i think) bolts into the drain holes (opposite ends) and using a pry bar, or maybe a wrench as a lever, slowly worked the thing loose enough to get it to unscrew. gawd, i hate those $8/hour quick lube monkees. don't know it thats the OP problem, but that's what i had to do...
If you've tried the screwdriver trick and it just mangled the filter, you're pretty much relegated yourself to the one course of action left; basically, tear the filter apart and get to the mounting plate, and use either some bolts and a pry bar or some vice-grips to grab what you can near the base where it won't tear, and get it off like that.
I don't think I've ever NOT had an issue getting the filter off of a car that I didn't do the last oil change on... ugh.
Wasn't done at a quick lube place, but was definitely somebody I trust with the car.
I'll hit it with some PB Blaster tomorrow a few times, then push it back up on the ramps and see what I can do. The real problem there is the clearance SUCKS. Getting any kind of leverage is a bear.
Channel lock makes a good oil filter wrench that might work. I don't have one myself but thought if I ever got into the situation you are describing it might be the solution.

This is the style oil filter wrench you need it can be positioned all the way up to the top of the filter. They are available for different filter diameters.

Great tool....I've got one but the problem is clearance isn't there to use that tool. At this stage, he's going to have to take it apart, piece by piece.
