hey fellow hot rodders..newbie here from the char nc. area.. i bought an 85 w/ an auto trans, and pleased with its perf..traffic these days has me not regreting it also,,..so being a gearhead all these yrs. spent oalot of time w/rotory engines but knew a vette would cross my path one day and this 85 was sharp,,but thats it..drove,shifted like a truck.. after workin out the querks,, started playin w/hp..i know theres many guys on here that know alot and spent alot on their vettes but hopefully all of them have done these three things when faced w/a bone stocker.. i first pulled the screens from the mass air to allow better air flow of course,,that was a no brainer..my cat conv had broken up internally so i punched it out and stuck it back in gaining two improvements, sound and more power at all of this low revrs rpm range.. the sound i gained was just enouph throatiness w/out the horrible overdrive drone..last but not least is very effective and many gearheads are familliar w/ the 160 degree t stat.. i was prepared to put the 190 right back in if one hiccup occured.. my entire engine and related components are truly 20 to 30 degrees cooler than b4 and the hp gain is crazy..... only thing i regret is not doing these three tasks at once ...this vette feels like a diff vette than the one i drove home and ..oh,,dont expect 160 degree temps waitin on ur tacos in the drive thru thanx guys
yeah please take it easy on rookies like myself;that is with the money anyway..i know where the real power lies in real deep pockets,,lol..i wish i had a fraction of the money it took mod some of you guys vettes..think one of my first choices would be changing the rotating assy. for a higher revvin motor is this poss good choice or do most guys go directly to other areas like heads and computer work
Yea, it's pretty easy to jump on the new guy. Have any of you hardcore experts though that maybe since he gutted his cat and that it was CLOGGED, that it made the car alot peppier. How about you run on the treadmill breathing thru a straw and then run again with full lung capacity. Think before you post smart *** comments. Everyone was there at some point. God forbid someone new gets a little enjoyment and SOTP from doing cheap mods and gaining back power from a clogged 20 year old catalytic converter. I mean wow, that is just soooooo uncommon these days.
You might consider 1.5 and 1.6 roller rockers on the stock cam. Yes that was 1.5 AND 1.6. Put 1.5 on the exhaust and 1.6 for the intake. This combo with give you another 10 HP and will idle better than 1.6 all the way around. This has been used on the 1985 with good results.
For the cost of gaskets and some tooling....you can port the plenum and runners. These are aluminum and will grind very easily. Gasket match the transitions.
Want to go farther.....read VADER86's web site. Lot's of good information for you.
I think all people are getting at is that the 160-degree t-stat and the de-screened MAF are not likely to make any or any noticeable gains.
It's worth asking around to see what people have done that has been shown to work, it will save you a lot of headache and money. These cars have been around a while, most of the tricks have been tried before.
