Default Retard stock cam?

Is there to little over lap to both with retarding the stock '88 cam? I need to replace my balancer and thought to myself, while I'm there why not see if the cam could be tweaked a little. Any experience with this? I'd like better top end.

IMO not worth effort for the minimal if any improvment. You'll also find there is huge difference in the amount of work between a balance replacement and a timing set replacement.

I plan to do the timing chain while I'm there as well. It's likely to need it and I'd like to put in a new cam but it's just not going to be in the works for awhile.

Default off road only

'old school' is to retard the cam for more top end power, but your oem CAM timing is oem retarded 8* (or more) from most efficient fuel mileage/power for emissions... for off-road use, advance the cam to get intake opening centerline at abt 106* ATDC...improvement in fuel economy and power is noticeable.

Personally, I would waste your time changing cam timing with a stock cam. A cam swap would be the way to go. You can optimize any configuration better with a aftermarket cam.
