I have fully charged my AC but the compressor continuously kicks on and off every couple seconds. Is this a simple fix or the compressor the problem?
Is the system still R12 or has it been converted? If it has been converted it is possible that a pressure or cycling switch needs to be replaced with the 134A version. Hopefully SunCR will respond, he will know for sure.
it has been changed to 134 years ago, but as far as I know it never did this before. I just got the car from my dad and he says he can't remember if it did before. If it is the pressure or cycle relay where are they located I'll try it anyway.
Really need to know what the pressures are and the outside air temp. Rapid cycling - assuming a full charge - is usually a partially blocked orifice. The small amount of gas that gets into the Evaporator flashes off and there's no oomph (pressure) left when it reaches the Low Pressure Switch at the Evaporator exit. The switch contacts open and the compressor cycles off. System pressure rises immediately, contacts close and the compressor cycles back on. I wouldn't run it too much until you know for sure (as a low charge will cause the same symptoms). Gas carries the lube and if enough isn't reaching the compressor, it seizes. Go to a shop if you don't have gages - or buy some - about $80 to $100 for a decent set.
If would be better to know pressures - restriction, though commonly in the orifice screen, could be on the suction side. Too replace it, you discharge. Orifice is in the Evaporator inlet which is the small line at the bottom. Backup the line so you don't wrench off or crease the inlet. Remove the orifice with a pair of needle nose pliers, but go easy getting it out. There's an arrow on it, but note it's orientation. Clean it with Brakes Parts Cleaner and some compressed air - but don't blow a hole in the screen - or just buy a new one for 12 Bucks. Replace the Accumulator adding 3 ozs of new oil. Button it back up, pull a vacuum and recharge.
