Ok there is probably a thread on this somewhere but I sure didnt find it. I have a chance to buy either set for very cheap and just wondering what the differences. I have heard stories about being flame hardened exhaust seat in the 906 and cosmetic differences only. I googled it and every website has a different set of answers!! Just thought I would bring it up here because you guys are always pretty reliable!
I have seen the same differing info posted; if you have the choice take the ones that most recommend. The "bad' ones are not supposed to flow as well
You are aware of the valve lift limit unless you modify the valve guide boss?
Not too many here swapping to Vortecs
Better info available over on 3rd Gen
There was a magazine article a few years ago that printed some info about the "bad" vortec heads. In a later issue they corrected it and said all stock vortec castings flowed the same, but the rumor never died.
The 906 Vortec heads were installed only on 3/4 ton "heavy duty" trucks and have a hardened seat insert that is pressed in the casting (instead of the flame hardened surface treatment of the 062 passanger car/light duty truck Vortec heads).
Because of the GM prouduction line machine work - some of the 906 seat inserts were not opened up under the valve job for the transition into the exhaust bowl...
Any competent cyl head man with seat and guide machine can fix this problem using a bowl hog cutter. Any compentent cyl head porter can fix it (and improve the SSR) with a die grinder and 45 mins worth of port work.
There is no reason to avoid the 906 Vortec casting. Unless your a complete idiot, your not going to install USED cyl heads strait out of the junkyard.
Like a competent engine builder, your going to want to take them and have them magnufluxed, surfaced, the guides checked, new valve seals and a valve job right??
No reason to not buy a set of 906's at a discount (becasue of all the ill informed think they suck) and then use the savings to spring for a little SSR work and bowl blending while they are in the machine shop getting checked out.

We have made the best power on the dyno with the 906 castings but we do use a bowl hawg in the bowl area on both the intake and exhaust to open them up.
062 Mexican casting we have found have a smaller intake runner appox. 159 CC and not 170 like GM advertises.
Ok ya this is starting to make alot more sense now. I def wasn't planning of installing used heads. I am planning on hopefully just doing this once and not having problems all the time. I don't quite know which one I'm going to get yet but the info helped alot. As usual you guys helped out alot. Always reliable!
