My 88 TPI L98 has 58,000 miles on it and something is causing it
to act weird from time to time. If I drive for any distance (1 mile or 100) and I cut it off then leave the window down or a door unlocked
it will crank but not take the gas. I then shut it off, crank it back up,
power windows up, shut it off and lock the doors and get out. Unlock the door crank it back up and runs fine. It's like she has to be treated a certain way...... Any ideas? Thoughts???
sounds lie the vats is cutting off the fuel and ignition. You might see if someone has a vats bypass schematic, and make yourself a sneak circuit to bypass the vats and see if that fixes it.
What it sort of sounds like is a bad left door switch with the window pulling on the wires when it's down.
VATS might be it. Take a look under the steering column. See some wires run outside the colum and down? If you don't that would make it more likely the lock cylinder is the problem. Almost all the early VATS cars have had it replaced for similar problems.
If you get the schematic you can install a resistor and bypass the lock cylinder. The key has a resistor in it. Measure it with an ohm meter and get something close at radio shack.
Can't tell you any more. Mine had the cylinder replaced, the new one hasn't given any trouble, was replaced over 10yrs ago.
Do some searches I'm sure you'll find instructions.
The car will always start (crank) but will not take the gas at times. It idles normal but when you press the gas you will not be able to go over 20mph.....
So you are saying the car starts but you have no RPM's or the car won't crank until you do all that? then starts and is normal. If it starts I would not think it was a VAT's issue.
Thanks for the offer. It's really nice that someone close by offered. I'm yet to meet anyone in this area that is a Vette guy. Thanks again.
