Default 1994 emergency brake

I searched the forum for someone who might have had the same problem but didn't find any. I cannot get the e-brake to stay up in the locked position. I can hold it up and it works but won't stay. I just need a little help where to start. I did do a search on the internet too but didn't find anything.

The e-brake retracts after engaging. If I understand you correctly, it does not stay in the up position??????

Hi Mikey531,

When you pull it up, do you feel spring tension?

As you lower the handle, do you continue to feel spring tension?

When you depress the button on the end, do you feel some light spring tension?

Basically, the unit is a ratchet with a locking lever, which the button, when depressed, unlocks. Otherwise, the locking lever always engaged, However, there is a pilot hole in the mechanism, into which a pin (nail) can be inserted to hold the locking lever in a 'disengaged' position -- perhaps the pin is still inserted from prior maintenance of the brakes?

There are two screws which hold the plastic cover on the mechanism (may require removing the lower seat bolster to gain access and moving the seat all the way rearward).

Please note, the arm is designed to swing down out of the way, while still retaining the brake's engagement -- to disengage the brake, it requires lifting the handle until you feel spring tension and then depressing the button to release the locking latch, then while holding in the button, lowering the handle all the way, to fully disengage the brake.

I kind of understand how it works now. I took off the cover and there is tension on the cable but it moves freely. I pushed in the button to engage the hole and it pulls up but goes right back down. The wire is hooked up for the warning light and it works but I guess the ratchet parts isn't catching or something?

I did it just like the manual says and it didn't work. The parking brake light on the dash comes on but then goes off. Is there anything in the mechanism that can get stuck?

On the 88 I just picked up thats exactly what fixed it. I sprayed it down with carb cleaner, scrubbed it, and re lubed it all. Now it works just fine. When you pulled it up it would not hold the mechanism up, the grease had gotten dirty and everything was kind of stuck together.
