Finally was able to get my new ride, '91 L98 w/automatic tranny out for a drive. When shifting thru the gears manually all was well. When excelerating 'normally' all is good. But from a stand still and hitting it hard, she'll excelerate right up but doesn't want to automatically shift through the gears unless I back off on the pedal. When cruising it'll shift down when you hit the pedal which seems normal. Any suggestions??
check your throttle valve cable and make sure its not super tight at wot.if it is use a small screwdriver to realease the holding tab on the cable near the throttle body, then from inside the car quickly step the pedal down to the floor and this should get you close to the right TV cable tension.make sure to push the retaining clip back in place.also if the fluid is brown and burned smelling it may be time for a rebuild.
Okay checked the TV cable at WOT, Hmmm, it's as tight at a piano wire! Seems as tight at the pedal cable. So if I understand your post - I disconnet the TV cable, depress the pedal to WOT, let off the pedal and then reconnect the TV cable. Sounds too good to be true but sure will give it a try. I'm assuming there is some type of automatic cable adjusting mechanism somewhere? My '91 Service maunal says refer to "90 book for automatic transmission section. that sucks...
Thanks for the advise - I'll repost after trying this..
What you suggested worked great. From a dead stop it accelerates through the gears great but now if I'm slowly cruising it doesn't want to down-shift into 1st, only 2nd then up. Will the cable self adjust, eventually get tighter on it's own?? Thanks for the advise!

The TV cable should always be set so it is at full extension at WOT. If it is not set-up that way it will eventually burn up the transmission and it will not downshift correctly. The problem you are having sounds like your givernor on the side of the transmission is set-up with too little weight or spring prressure. When you mention that it will not shift at WOT how high have you reved it? AT WOT the transmission should shift around 4500 RPM. If the shift points are higher then 5000 RPM you could purchase a B&M transmission governor kit and through some trial and error testing you should be able to get the correct shift points. Another idea (if you don't want to play around with springs and weights) would be to purchase a stock corvette governor and install it, this should get your shift points close.
