Default Spark Plug Gap

I did a tune up on my car this weekend with AC Delco platinum plugs and MSD 8.5mm wires. The old plugs that I pulled out were all gapped different. The gap for mine is .50, and some of the plugs that came out were up to .70, .65, .60 etc, just all out of wack. Once the tune up was done, wow what a difference in the throttle response and just the over all running of the car.

Now what would have made the gap in the plugs be so off like that. Would time of the plugs being in the car so long weaken the metal causing it to bend?
