on a 87 corvette will the compressor still kick on if it doesn't have any freon in the system??
I am fixing to buy a new compressor, but noticed while taking it off that I can still turn the clutch by hand, but its hard, but still can be turned. So I hooked it back up and turned the a/c on and it won't kick on, but I have already taken out all the freon.

You can bypass the low pressure switch I believe to make it come on when the freon is low just to make sure the clutch is engaging. Your car takes R-12 which is pricey so I would have the tech who charges the system for you add in some dye and check for leaks right away. Good luck!
I did just apply direct power to the compressor and it works. So my question is now, Can I convert my system to R134 and what is all involved in the conversion?

WARNING ++++
Overriding the safety feature of the low pressure switch (especially with NO freon (or oil) in the system/compressor) for any length of time will likely destroy the compressor (if it's not already dead) -- so suggest doing this only for seconds if necessary...

I bought the conversion kit and followed instructions. That was several years ago and its still all good. About 30 minutes and $30.
