Since it has never worked, I bought the TPIS A/C delete pully. I want better access to the passenger side of the motor. What is inside that large plastic box attached to the firewall where the hard lines run in to? How hard is it to remove?
Its your car and you can do whatever you want. That box is bolted to the firewall and I believe the bolts are on the inside? I'd have to double check. Look for a picture of someone who has removed theres and you can get an idea of where the bolts go.
thanks, removing the box and cond. is a piece of cake and will come out in one piece. If you don't like seeing the vent holes you will need to make a block off plate, and overall it's pretty easy and straight forward. Additional things that I did was to eliminate the AC pulley, tensioner etc. which all started here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...te-pulley.html
Very little inside this unit. Lot of airspace behind blower motor, an evaporator and a flapper door and the upper resistor assembly for low fan speeds. Once you remove the inner fender and frame strut, not terribly difficult to take off. I seem to recall that the most difficult part is getting to a couple of the lower screws behind the assbly. Just excercise some patience as you take off.
Unless you are building a double throwdown, off road race car meaning that you need to take off every ounce possible and you have no plans for the car to ever be restored, then MAYBE it makes sense to start hacking the car up.
To answer your question, the a/c evaporator, blower motor and blower control are in that box. If you still want to have a blower for heater and defroster, you will not have an electronic controller for it if you remove that box. My description is based on an 88 model, but I assume that all C4's have the same components included in that box.
I personally understand the hacking that must go on when building an all out, off road, lightweight race car. When this is done, I always just hope that it's being done to a car that is not much good for anything else.
I think back on the fifties and sixties to the times when thousands of NICE cars, like 55 to 57 BelAir hardtops, and thirties Ford Roadsters and Coupes were DESTROYED by people hacking on them like this. It's a real shame to think about it. It could be that 20 or 30 years from now someone will find your car in a barn and be sorely disappointed when they find it all hacked up.
As said earlier, it's your car, your money, your tools and your sweat. You have all the right in the world to set it on fire just to watch in burn if that's what you want. I just hate to stand by and see it happen.
But if he kept everything he takes off and stored them in boxes, he could pass them onto the next buyer if they wanted to put back on. The guy we bought our 72 convertible from did this and it was just as much fun putting back on as he had taking it all off. Different strokes for different folks.
took the box off my 1990 for repairs not bypassing. Anyways all the bolts that hold it on are on the outside of the car. Oh and all you have to remove to get access to all the bolts is the inner tire fenderwall and the lower fender piece behind the front tire. the hardest bolt to get to is the one right behing the passenger side exhaust manifold. when you get the box loose take the fan motor off of it then you can remove the whole box without taking that frame support thing off.

How far back in years do you have to go to have no ABS no CCM ??? I like the looks of this and while at it maybe get a donor car lacking the other expensive to fix like abs..etc..FX3.. Without hacking a nice loaded car and turning into a dune buggy. I like the idea of less weight as well no airbag a big plus too personally I don't trust them.. Basically an old school hot rod with the lines of a C4..

Well, the original motor is gone. This isn't a daily driver or trailer queen. The only time the soft top is up is pouring and I get stuck out in it. It hasn't worked since I've owned it. So it's really dead weight to me. plus the ease of getting to the #8 header bolt will make it all worth while.
your ideas are no worse then mine, hell I pondered with extracting the heater core right out the front of the firewall the fiberglassing the cutout piece of firewall back in place LOL. But if you can fiberglass I'm sure you could make a a/c delete thing so the fan would still work.

I think you could do the delete pulley for a 1/3 tpis's price by using a 86-87 a/c bracket and r4 delete pulley.
