Yes, there are many things that can go wrong, the number one reason a torque converter dies if FOD, foreign object damage, from the sprags or clutches letting loose and running through the blades, bending them. If this doesn't kill the converter, it will cause vibration.
All it is is pretty much a complicated centrifical wet clutch, and eventually the clutch surfaces will wear out, usually the gear clutches wear out much sooner though. I think a symptom of this would be an excessively high stall, but one that never quite locks up.
I'm sure there are others that I'm not aware of also. What's yours doing?

When i step on it i hear rumbling or scrabing from somwhere between the gas pedal and the shifter. I also get a bad shudder but thats only like once a month that happens. The rumbeling or scrabing is really hard to describe sounds kinda like an exhaust leak witch opens and closes as the pipe shakes due to bumps and dips in the road. - maybe i shuld do a recording of it with my MD..... :)
Ok i've narrowed it down a bit, the drivetrain after the torque converter is fine! In a full stop i step on the brake and give it a little throttle and the noise starts right about 1200 rpm. Since nothing after the torque converter is moving, it has to be somthing before the tqverter or the tqverter.. - I'm gonna pull off the exhaust system and do pressure a test including the manifold just to be COMPLETLY shure. - anybody have any ideas about what could be making that rumbeling sound .
You have not said anything about fluid level or the color of the trans fluid.
If it is not bright red and have a sweet smell, you have problems. Dark fluid is a sign the clutches and bands are shredding this could damage the tq conv.
fluid level is ok - and the color is red - brownish but still pretty transparent. I guess i shuld change it...... allthough i wouldn't think that it would cause such noises..... - well i'm gonna change it :) - is it somthing i can do my self - i have access to a lift - also what fluid shuld i put in - any recomendations??
Re: Can a torque converter go bad??? (DoubleAught)
When mine went bad, it made the car shudder badly at certain rpm/loads.
DOH! that's exactly what mine is doing :( I'm not that familiar with transmissions and torque converters. Does the torque converter share fluid with the transmission??
Beat on your converters with a rubber hammer, see if they rattle. Remove the dust cover on the converter and see if the noise is gone. If it is check the crankshaft end play, if over .007 you have too much. Make sure the flexplate is not contacting any parts of the starter ( I have seen so much end play that the ring gear contacts the starter drive stop ring). Yes, the converter shares fluid with the transmission.
Can a bad converter rattle when sitting there at idle?!?!? I wonder if that rattling noise I have could be from the converter!! It DEFINITELY got louder when I got back into town and stopped at a few lights.
