'96 LT4. I've had an intermittent problem. I FINALLY discovered that the problem is a cracked coil-terminal tower on the distributor cap. So obviously a new cap is in order.
BUT... I know I have to pull the balancer to replace the distributor. Is that necessary to replace just the cap and rotor? I'm certainly not looking forward to pulling the water pump just to do this, but I guess that's the minimum R&R necessary to get to the distributor at all.
If I was going that far I would replace the whole distributor.
But if you don't want to replace the whole distributor, the balancer is just another three bolts. So see if you can get the cap off, if not take out the three bolts, you may have to do the 2x4 and hammer trick, but the balancer is usually not too bad
