84 dash is lit up like a Christmas tree. Please Help w/img
(This is my *new* car)
I did quite a bit of searching and did not find any that I thought were same/similar. If you have a thread to point me too, I am ears.
My dash is not working. It is completely lit up, no LCD numerals are showing though. A picture of the dash is included. Here are some additional details
Prev owner said it would come on and off. (During my 900 mile trip home it NEVER came on.)
Radio also does not work
Headlights on/off makes no difference
I took apart and cleaned the connector on the firewall by the battery.
The right blinker and high beam ligths work. (I think the left bulb is dead)
I checked the fuses, visually and with a fuse tester.
This is a CFI to carb convertion. Should not matter. I really need speedo and fuel at this point.
Has anyone seen this specific failure before? The fix?
Thanks,
Jason

Oh it does matter that now you have a carb. No more Cross Fire means no more sensors. Everythings lit up because the computer isn't getting information from the sensors, how can it as they're no longer there. The only thing the computer knows to do now is, light up the displays fully. No numbers displayed as there's no sensors anymore to send numbers to the computer. The computer has nothing to read, so nothing to show on your dash.
As for your radio light, it's probably burned out.

1. I have seen several other threads where people have converted to card and still have everything EXCEPT fuel econ and mile until empty. That would seem to make sense and you are just removing the engine management, not any of the sensors (oil, water, etc.)
2. I said the radion does not work, not that it does not light.

I have one in the basement that does exactly that. I can't remember what Zip told me it was, but basically that dash is toast. There is a problem with the display, not the electronics.
If you have polarized sunglasses, you can read it. (at least I could)
And yeah, nothing to do with carb conversion. Sensors for ECM and sensors for dash are not shared. I completely removed my engine harness for a DFI harness and have full dash functionality. OK so no MPG, that is the only thing sent from the ECM to the dash.

That is very interesting. I will try to find some polorized sunglasses

I was talking to a guy posting his repair services on eBay. He says that the whole display is "sunbleached". Apparently this is where the backlight is shining through where it is not supposed to.
Looks like there is some sort of short that is causing everything to light up. If the radio doesn't work either, I would be going under the dash and start poking around. Could be just something is unplugged or somebody hacked into the harness for some reason.
I just had the same problem, The 84 vette I bought sat in the sun for 10 yrs, The dash lit up bright but no LCDS at all, Looked just like your dash looks ( I believe the dash was burnt)... I just bought a new dash & waiting for it in the mail, If that fix's my problem I suggest you have your dash rebuilt... There is a guy on this sight that will do it I hear & I hear he is pretty fast & good... You can e-mail him at:
I was going on the word of a friend in Texeas who changed his 84 to a carb 2 years ago. He said his dash had no displays. He went to analog gauges. So, I gave bad information here.
From what I read and seen pictures of with repair guys on ebay, sun bleached means you can see numbers and the grafts when the car is shut off, no power to the dash. Actually another friend of mine with an 84 went for the ebay guy repair. He was told it would cost $350 to repair (once the guy got it). This car cruise friend then got a bill for $500. He paid and then recieved an 85 dash (which has different grafts and what not). This friend of mine didn't get his 84 dash back and was pi***d. He didn't pursue getting his 84 dash back and used the 85 dash in his car. Oh, he was without a dash for 6 weeks.
