I think location does present a significant issue. Putting them in that last turn before the mufflers seems the only logical place. But, whether it's there or further upstream, you'll be emitting fumes that could heat the underside of the car.
I wouldn't be crazy about that near the gas tank or under the floorpans.
There was a muffler listed in the summit catalog that had dual outputs. One output was for a cutout. I was thinking of looking at the muffler specs to see if it fits my 87 Vette...
A friend of mine has the QTP electric cutouts on his 1990 C4. He has had to replace the electric motors once or twice. He said installing the replacement motor was not hard. The exhaust shop installed two mini/short y pipes in the front y pipe. I will try to get some photos for you.

Pics would be great! Does your buddy have headers and/or a manual tranny? I am guessing you'll have more space with a manual tranny.
some electric cutouts have provisions for putting a turn down on them so you can direct the exhaust heat away from the floor pans.maybe that could improve your options for placement.

Also, any exhaust you dump under the car is going to be a ton louder in the car.
