Default Distributor module grease

I took my distributor apart today to see how it was doing. As far as I know it's never been opened up. It looks like dielectric grease on the module and not heat sink compound. Though I'm no CSI chemical analysis team..

It must not get very hot. Some oil had gotten in under the module too. I cleaned it up and used silver CPU heat sink compound, I doubt oil will penetrate it.

Is the oil there from traveling up the shaft? I cleaned the screen out, there was minor debris in it.

The upper distr. bushing (under the screen) is lubricated by grease being packed in aroiund it, through heat, it is supposed to lube the bushing /shaft.
There shouldn't be oil up there I would suspect is that if the bushings are worn, that would allow oil coming up the shaft (or at least that far up).

I remember there being a grease well but it's been a long time since I've had one apart. There's a plastic cap if memory serves, at the bottom of everything covered by a felt washer. I could check that out to. Maybe that oily stuff got in there from that notch, it doesn't seal perfectly with the cap.

On the ones I have here, there is a surrounding piece of tubular steel part attached as part of the reluctor on the shaft. That tubular "cap" slides inside the pick-up assembly and over the upper part of the bushing in the case. This prevents oil from coming up the shaft.
It looks like motor oil in your pics not grease. I think in any event, wether to much up and down play, bushings etc. it may be a good idea to pull it and see what is going on.

I checked out the FSM, it says no periodic maintenance is necessary. The lower bearing is lubricated by oil and the top bearing by an oil reservoir. I had the dizzy sitting tipped on it's side, I'm thinking some oil leaked out from that. When I went back and looked at it this afternoon there was more oil in an area I had cleaned yesterday. Now it's sitting upright.

The FSM also says to use silicone grease on the module. I remember a big thread about that.

I did shim up and down play a few years back. It seems good for play all directions.

In a sense that is true, the only maintenance is when parts go bad. The bushings are pressed in the case and the only way they sold them was buying the case w/bearing. (this included the shaft w/reluctor (sp.?), pick-up, harness, module etc.)
I have had bushings that were worn out and replaced the case. (no oiling issues, it showed distr. gear wear and timing moving)

I'm sure we can agree that in the late 80's they weren't quite up to speed like today with the heat sink type grease for computer use.

Hopefully it was because it was on it's side, but a periodic look after installed and you will know for sure.
