I'm replacing the transmission in an 88 Ranger. (floor shifter, linkage operated) The replacement came from a cable operated Explorer. The manual shift lever at the transmission is different, and points down instead of up. I want to put the old lever on the new transmission.
It appeared that changing the lever would be simple until I discovered the retaining pin that holds it in the case. The pin fits in a blind hole, so it has to be pulled out. They don't leave you much pin to work with there, and even a gentle attempt with vicegrips did more harm than good.
I'm at the point of drilling the case from the opposite side so that I can drive the pin out. Open to alternative suggestions.
in my 89 Mustang. I have that motor also. Best of luck on your repairs. Eric W.
Drilling the pin itself was an option, but because of its small diameter (.115) I was afraid to try it. Instead I scoped it out and drilled an access hole from the other side and tapped the pin out with a small punch. Obviously I'll now have to plug the hole I made with something, but it was a quick and dirty solution that worked well.
