Changed the oil in my 93 lt1 yesterday, put in full synthetic, have oil leaks in numerous spots now.I guess it didn't have synthetic in it before?I guess I'll have to drain it out and put in syn. blend.I'm pretty sure that's what was in it before and only had some minor leaks.I just hate to throw away 35.00 worth of good oil.

Most synthetics are super thin and will allow leaks to become more visable on a older/higher mileage application.

Since 1992, Mobil 1 has been the factory and service fill lubricant for all Corvettes manufactured by General Motors.

I suggest you buy a dye/light/glasses kit and see the leaks.

Fel-Pro intake, valve cover, and oil pan gaskets will give you a nice ventage car that is leak free. (Right stuff of course!)

Your leak could be as simple as pulling the sending units and wraping their threads with teflon tape. Won't know until you see it tho...

could also be as simple as tightening your pan gasket as well. Remember not to overtorque the bolts. pan bolts..small, 50 inch lbs, large, 8 ft. lbs

Even though synthetic oil is thinner, most of the reason NOT to use it in older cars which didn't use synthetic before, is its cleaning properties, not its thinness.

Over time (not 1 day), the synthetic cleaning agents tend to remove deposits left by dino oil and create some oil leaks that didn't exist before.

So, one last concern/thought -- did the old oil filter gasket come off with the old filter (check the garbage to be sure).

On toipic but non Vette, I just bought a new GMC 4X4 and its time for the second oil change, 6K in 45 days, sheesh......... Anyway, is it time to put syntho in now? I have heard that it isnt good for break in but you want to swap over as soon as possible.

What about PTFE products? I Slick 50'd my last GMC around 40K, again at 100 and it was still strong after 200+

My '85 Coupe is long past the syntho stage but with a rebuild on the horizon, I will be looking into the same issue soon with it.

TIA!!

I have an '08 Silverado with the 6.0L motor and I changed oil at 1300 miles (dino) just to get any gunk out of the motor. At 3200 miles, the next oil change was to Quaker State synthetic blend (a dealer freebie).

I'll be going to a full synthetic (Mobil-1 5W-30) at the next oil change and use 5000 intervals between changes. Today's new engines don't really need additives. They are cleaner, the machining is more precise and the materials are better.

OEM recommendations for oil change intervals are going up even with the use of regular dino oils. And with oil life monitors as part of the DIC displays, it's easy to track oil life.

I tow a 5600 lb trailer with my truck so I think a full synthetic will work fine for me. As long as Wal-Mart keeps having sales on Mobil-1, it's easy to justify the additional cost of a synthetic oil.
