As mine is going bad (does not start some times, Battery voltage is good, tapping starter w/ hammer seems to work). After reading about all of the problems people seem to have w/ rebuilt parts, I'd like to get a new starter vs a rebuild. Gm lists a new one for $313.00, and thepartsladi has a new one for $278.00. I then saw this guy on eBay, selling a new starter for $80.00? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-S...Q5fAccessories
I am wondering if anyone has bought anything off of these guys, and what your experience was like.
I haven't dealt with them but with a positive rating of 99.6% I would take the chance. Anytime you buy something you take a risk and for the price it might be a great deal. Or pay 3X as much for the same guarantee from GM.
Randy!!!! rebuild yours! you know it wasn't abused. so make it last longer.
Go to a automotive electrical place, and ask them to turn your armature and undercut it.
Then, you may be able to get the parts you need from them or auto zone will have them.
1. new brushes.
2. new brush springs
3. end bearings
4. solenoid
5. plastic brush holders
It's easy to rebuild it. If you are smacking it with a hammer, and it works, it's either brushes or a solenoid.
The rebuild will cost you less than $100, and you know the guy who was in it last.
I think kragen and autozone have a starter rebuild kit with instructions.
You are still going to have to undercut the armature even if it doesn't need turning.
Well, to be honest, if that's brand new, that is a smokin deal.
I had a starter from an aircraft tow tug modified from 6 volt to 12 volt, and they did a good job. worked good for a long time. probably still crankin' that old flathead Chrysler 6. Cost me $83 in 1989
I only used them once.

if its the high torque min starter 9 times out of 10 its just the contacts in the solenoid that needs to be replaced. Should be no more than $5 at any electrical starter alternator shop.
