As a result of a earlier posts about a 1200 rpm vibration, I have purchased a new balancer from GM & taken the old one off. The old one has 2 weights in it, and new one has none, and none loose with it.. I asked the GM parts guy about ordering weights and he said it had no listing for them seperately.
I see no easy, or any way at all to get the old ones out(they look to be center punched). Has anyone else run into this & solved the weight issue???
I am getting ready today to do the same replacement, my vibration is around 1000 rpms. The balancer I got is a OEM from the dealership. (Inside track, I got it cheap). The dudes in the service bay said "Bolt her on and she will good to go".
Every balancer has it's own unique characteristics. Some may need extra wiehgts to assure true balance, others won't. The one I have does not have any extra weights. Their kinda like Tires and rims, some will need lots of balancing weights others won't.
I just hope the vibration goes away once I get it on (Please, oh Please!!) :yesnod:
I thought you were supposed to move the weights from the old balancer to the new one. I did not think the that balancer was "neutrally balanced". I would suggest you find out FOR SURE before you just slap 'em on.

In looking through the archives, I also thought I was to move the weights, but see no way to remove the old ones & GM says no listing for the weights, Sooooooo...
My vibration is in the 900-1200 range, not always there, and goes away after 15-20 miles. I suspected either dualmass flywheel or balancer. A earlier post generated responses that said do the balancer 1st. I have it off, and it looks OK, but definately easier to change than the flywheel..I am waiting on some new O2 sensors before I can put her back on the road. Please post your results if you get yours replaced 1st.
"If you are replacing the damper, you must install new balance weights in the same hold locations as found on the old damper." =from a maint. book I have. Which does not however specify how to install them. I don't think you can remove the old weights for re-use. I do know however that the wieghts need to be installed. Remember this helps balance the rotating assembly, not just the balancer. I know a machine shop could do this or could at least supply you with the weights.
CRAP!!! I changed the balancer, and the vibration is still there. It did need to be changed anyway, rubber sticking out of a 1/4 of it. I did not find any extra weights on the balancer I removed.
Don't know about moving weights, but I have heard about the external and internally balanced Vette set up. Guess I was lucky no weights no worry! Still got the shakes, Guess it's time to look at the Torque Converter. :mad
Kman, I'm with you. I have got some 5/16 bolts that are a "drive them in" fit and am going to insert them in same locations as the weights on the old unit.

Sorry to hear you still got the problem. As mine is a 6-speed, my next thought is the dualmass flywheel. However in talking around, a guy thought that anything being driven by the surpentine belt could cause the same problem. He suggested removing the belt and then see if the vibration was still there. Just a idea, I think I'll try before the whole flywheel/clutch thing...
