I have a 94 convertible and for some reason the PKE light on the info center never goes out. I had a fob for it but I suspect it does not work as I have put in a new battery and can not get the doors to cycle. Could it be the PKE unit is faulty. I have a new FOB on the way hoping that it may solve the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sorry to say I don’t think the FOB is going to solve the problem. The light is completely controlled by the PKE receiver. Most likely the receiver has to be replaced but you should try a couple of basis steps first.
Disconnect battery for 30 sec to reset entire system. If light comes on when battery is reconnected and key is on, that would be a bad sign. You can see is it will respond to any commands to go in to programming mode but if the light is on I don’t think you will get there.
If there is no change or improvement the PKE is likely bad. The 2 seconds when the PKE light is on when key is turned on is a form of self test and if the light stays on it is failing it.
If the above reset proceedure doesn't yeild the desired results then let's find out why the PKE light is on.
Do the reset like Pcolt outlines.
Key on engine off. Jumper ALDC pin 8 to ground (pin 4 is ground btw)
Read the codes like the flashing FX3 codes IE one flash means one, two flashes means two and so on. All codes are two digits long.
12 = Receiver memory bad
13 = Transmitter not in range
14 = Non-valid transmitter received
15 = Valid transmitter received
16 = Passenger door button pressed
17 = Hatch button depressed
42 = the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything.
BTW verts are sometimes known to have water in their rears that shorts the hatch latch circuit. I wonder if that would cause the hatch button bit...
thanks for the reply. I was afraid that was the case. Will look around for the part. I hear it is not fun removing the dash to get to it. Any shortcuts or things to watch out for so I do not screw up something else trying to fix this?
thanks
I have one in my garage, I swaped out the PKE for another alarm. If you wantt o pay for shipping I will send, if it works, great, (and a small donation to St Judes would work).
Taking the dash off is easier than you think. Once you get the hang of it, 20 minutes tops.
I don’t know of any real valid short cuts. I have heard stories about coming out from the front but not with out cutting a lot of plastic and then I can’t see how it would even be possible then. I would never recommend that to destroy a car in that way. After you get it out properly you will understand.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to me careful of the plastic because the plastic is fragile after 15 years. Give yourself plenty of time and use a FSM disassembly procedure. Don’t rush, pull or push or eat Wheaties on that weekend.
I did not outline the pulling codes (above) as it is good plan, but I did not think it would work if the PKE light was always on.
