I'm having trouble with my'86 L-98, don't know if it 's the timing marks on the gears not lining up or not. The car runs at slow speeds well but if yougas it she will spark knock like heck. The timing is set properly and the engine heats up quickly to 200deg. under slow 35-45 mph. driving. The scanner also shows a elec. spark control code, any help sure would be studied, thanks
The ESC code could be from when you disconected the brown wire to set the timing. You did disconnect the wire before you set the timing? Clear the codes and see if it comes back.
Generally if the timing chain slips the car won't run at all. Post the numbers for the codes you get after you clear them.
A) Make sure the EST lead is disconnected when setting the base timing.
B) Make sure you RE-connect the EST lead after setting the timing.
C) Make sure you disconnect the battery power to the ECU to clear the codes.
If you have done the above, check the damper to be sure the outer ring hasn't slipped. If it has, the 6 degrees or what ever you're setting the timing to could be WAY off. Best way I know of, is to remove the #1 spark plug. Insert sonething (screwdriver?) and bring the piston up to TDC on the power stroke. See if the timing marks indicate TDC. If not, replace the damper. Good luck.
Thanks for all the reply's. I decided to check the timing marks on the crank, after all it was an adjustable crank gear, lesson #1. Turns out that's what the problem was, there is a 0 and a dote about the same size, I lined the cam with the 0 instead of the dote. Any way ,I put the non- adjustable c.gear on, this should do it!
