I have a 87. I am noticing smoke coming from the tailpipe when I start it up. It will not continue running on the first start, but runs smooth on 2nd try. Also, my check engine light stays on and show code for maf sensor or maf sensor burnout relay. I have replaced both. I purch. a rebuilt maf from autozone and a relay from oriellys, but I still get the code. Are these part of the same problem or separate. I may as well address my coolant sensor light coming on and the radiator and resovoir are full. And my anti-lock brake light is on. Aside from these issues, this is a sweet car. I drove it to Nashville a month ago. Best trip I have every had. Ran smooth and strong. Any help appreciated. By the way what does -bump- mean. (Im sure you can tell that I am new).
The smoke on start up is from old/cracked valve seals, not a big problem. Can't help w/ the MAF, my car does not have one. As for the coolant light, make sure the coolant system was "burped" correctly, do a search if you don't know what I mean. It could also be just a bad sensor or loose wire.
When you own a car this old, it's a good idea to get a FSM (Factory Service Manual) for the car, it will really help in fixing your problems.
Welcome to the forum, and good luck fixing your problems!
Oh, to get rid of the coolant light, try this.
Loosen rad cap
Start motor and bring temp up to stat opening
Remove cap and check for coolant flow at top, continue if you see flow
Have some coolant and the rad cap within reach of your right hand
Reach over to the throttle(left hand) and hold it open, about 2000 rpm
Add coolant to rad until full and then cap it off
Remove left hand from throttle
Done
