Default How do I tell the difference??

what is the difference between a normal steel distributor gear offered from crane etc compared to the required "melonized one" (aside from price0)and how do I visually tell the difference between them?

I don't believe you could "visually" tell the difference between the two! A steel/billet core "roller cam" requires a "melonized" gear. I would think that any steel/billet core cam should also. Don't know for "fact" but I would think that a GM distributor that shipped with a "roller" engine would have a "melonized" gear.

If you had "any doubts" about what you've got I'd spend the money for one if I had a "roller" engine. If it's a warranty "requirement" for a crate engine from anyone save the receipt with the warranty documents for the engine.

Years ago I believe there were MSD issues. YEARS AGO!!

Order one from GM for an early '90s truck with V8, and you will get the melonized gear. Visually, there are really no differences.
