New steering story
A few months ago I put on a new steering rack. It seemed to help a little but not a fix. A mechanic did a pressure test on the steering pump and said it was good. I decided I would have to live with it. Then a few days ago someone on the forum mentioned that if the belt tensioner spring was worn that the belt may slip some and cause problems. So $80 later I get ready to install it. The only way the new tensioner will install is when it is the opposite side of center on the belt. Hard to explain without looking. In the aluminum casting is a stop that keeps the pulley from coming past center. On mine that stop had broken off and the pulley was actually on the wrong side of center on the belt. I could put the belt on by hand. So on goes the new one and it takes a breaker bar to put on the belt. Test drive time, WOW a new car again. I may not have even needed the new rack but it is too late now. Again the forum comes to the rescue. Thanks guys for all of the great information. It is fun to drive again! :)
