On ocassion the shifter will pop out of 2nd gear and into neutral, I can feel it happening and not sure what to do. It seems to happen rarely and only while coasting and not while under hard acceleration. The car is an '85 with 85K original miles. I believe that cluthch and all components are stock as is the engine and drivetrain. Is this an indication of a specific area on the flywheel that is bad? It seems to only happen while in second gear and only once in a while. Will a swap of clutch fluid do anything to alleveiate the problem, I was told that these are hydraulic clutches and not something that can be adjusted via a cable like on my '87 Mustang 5-Speed? I'm trying to avoid a teardown since the problem is so intermittent. Thanks in advance.
You are looking at either worn shifting forks or worn engagement dogs in your transmission. When you are not under load (coasting), it allows the gears to slip out of engagement popping it out of gear.

Thanks that makes sense. What is the easiest next move without tearing the trans down?
