3 years ago I got tired of chasing dead and squeeling Bose amps around my '91 convertible. I found that replacing these amps with $75 apiece used amps could turn out to be an expencive continuous hobby. I decided to replace the speakers with regular Eclips speakers and amps but retaine the Bose head unit (I liked the tape/cd and the changing volume options). The sound quality I got from this "hybred" system left much to be desired to say the least, but I lived with it.
Last week the Bose head unit died (no signel output the official diagnosis). I was hoping for an inexpencive blown fuse or a loose wire. The lights were on but nobody was home. I bit the bullit and had an Alpine CDA7875 CD/receiver installed. WHAT AN AMAZING TRANSFORMATION. The sound is incredibly clear without distortian. Far superior to the "hybred" unit and I beleive even better than when it was new with the original Bose system.
If you are having problems with your Bose system or want better sound quality don't putz around with rebuilding speakers and those cheezy Bose amps like I did. Go ahead and replace the whole system. You won't regret it.
I had just decided that I would probably just chuck the whole Bose and go all new, but wasn't sure. Now I'm sure. I've got 2 bad speakers, so it's gonna be soon. Thanks for the heads up.
The first thing I did when I got the car was pull out the entire sound system. I could barely hear the thing at highway speeds. I did it myself and replaced the interior at the same time, so it took about 1 week, but it was definately worth it. If you have the ability to do it yourself it will save you big $$$. Good luck.
I'd like to replace the system in my 91. I have a rear amp blown right now. I had comtemplated the stock route, but aftermarket keeps sounding better and better.
