Default LT-1 rebuild questions

OK, I'd love to go 383 but its out of my budget because I'd have to add $1000+ roll cage and $2000 exhaust.

So it will be a simple rebuild, I can internally balance and change the flywheel. I figure at over 100K miles my dual mass is done for anyway.
Single mass - steel or aluminum? (I don't care about noise)
Should I replace the balancer at the same time?

I'm thinking pull heads, mic the cylinders to make sure they are still round (I have a couple of cylinders with very little compression).

Pull the engine, clean it up, new bearings. If the cylinders aren't round hope I can get by with .020 or .030 oversize. That will require new pistons and rings. Reccomendations? The engine will spend a lot of its life between 3K and 6K rpm.

Should I spend the time to port match the intake and stock heads to the gasket? Budget doesnt alow sending them off to LE.

What else needs to be done to just "freshen" the LT-1?

Why would have to get a rollcage?

Summitracing sells rebuild kits, as do others and I mated my longtubes and cats to the stock system and I plan on using the stock system when I rebuild my engine as a 383.

If I change the bore (beyond .030 oversize), stroke, camshaft, rockers or port it any more than gasket match it puts me in NCCC group 3. Group 3 classification requires a minimum 4 pt rollbar.
If I'm going to put a roll bar in I might as well make it safe and put in the full cage with door bars. It will also move me up 3 or 4 classes for NASA time trials (depends on power to weight) from TTC to TTA or TTS.

To get a 383 to breathe well requires headers so while a 383 is doable in my budget, the other modifications easily double the cost.

I was unable to find a Summit rebuild kit for an LT1, will one for a gen I work???

A 383 is not beyond .030, second if you look for rebuild kits for the LT1 family, there are about 10-15 on Summit.

The stock exhaust is quite good, there are several people on this forum w/383 and above running headers and stock exhaust.

I believe a 383 is .020 over and 389 .030 over, look at the kits on Summit and others, all say what the piston size is and the stroke.

Yes a 383 is only .020 over, but the stroke increases the displacement, anything over 355 is grp III for NCCC.

Thats good to know on the stock exhaust.

Off to look at the Summit website to get an idea of the parts cost.

I'm going to bring this to the top for today.

I'll bring it back up if I have any questions when rebuilding it.
