My 1986 has been starting and running fine until...... At times it would turn over and not start. The problem persited until unless it started on the first turn of the keyit would not start at all and the battery would die in a matter of 1 minute. A friend pointed me to the Vats so I got the key read and ordered a #2 sos plug to bypass the vats. When I took the hush panel down saw it had a homemade resistor bypass so I figured the resistors had failed, so I plugged in the Ecklers part. Now it wont even turn over ideas??
If it turned over, it was not the vats that was keeping it from starting, at least not in the traditional sense. If you have the wrong resistance, it won't let it turn over and won't fire the fuel injectors. It is possible that if there is a problem with the vats module that it is allowing it to turn over and not firing the injectors, but that is unlikely and wouldn't be fixed with a resistor bypass.
You need to put your resistor back and then do the conventional trouble shooting, in other words, is is it getting spark? getting fuel?
Ok when it shut down before after I hooked the new sos bypass from Ecklers, I did unplug it, unhooked the battery plugged the old resistor bypass back up and it still wouldnt do anything. After I got the reply from Skybolt I did as he said and plugged the old resistor back in and now the starter IS turning over. would that mean the computer needed more time to reset?? Fixing to go with the traditional checks... fuel pressure, spark etc. Stay tuned AND THANK YOU Skybolt for your help. I'll keep you posted if I get this thing goin Im namin my first born after ya.
ah hell ok got the car on the ground with the old resistor in and starter was turning with correct fuel pressure so like an idiot I plugged in the sos again and no starter. Plugged back in the old resistor and no starter. What now??????? I think its firing but i have got to get the starter turning again. Damn this vats stuff. my baby ran so good and never ever left me stranded now she doesent even wanna leave the shop.
You guys were completely right on the VATS. Ecklers screwed me on the SOS bypass they sent the wrong coded plug and had to reset the system(gonna start using Mid America again unless someone has found a better a shop). After that had plenty of fuel pressure but no fire so I took the distributor cap off and the tach wire, hot wire and ground were arching. and the dist plug leads had come loose. She fired right up, should I shrink wrap all the wires or replace the harness? Thank you guys so so much! My wife is so excited we can take the top off in the morning and take our country cruise route we haven't gotten to enjoy in 3 months. This forum/site is so friendly gonna upgrade my membership. Hope to help another user/friend in the future!
