Default WinXP/2000/RommasterII

Well, I am at wits end with this one. You XP wizards please help. I built a new Box and run XP and 2000 on my partitioned HD. Well, Neither will run my Rommaster II, Dos version 3.0. My GMPro works perfect.
It seems that it doesn't like using the port under DOS mode. I have tried the "Compatibility" portion, to try and run it like a 95 app, but no luck.
You have any ideas?

I don't use Rommaster, so I probably can't be of much help.... but, with my Needham's EMP-10 there is a downloadable driver for Windows NT that has worked fine for 2000 and XP as well. Does the Rommaster have any extra files for NT4 that you can try?

No the Rommaster II software is DOS 3.0, back in the olden days. I checked Xeltec Web sight for any updates, and they're not supporting it anymore. I tryed their new software, for WinXP for a differnt burner they sell, the SuperPro, and it doesn't recognise the Rommaster, so I am not sure if its doable with the XP. Maybe just have to use the 486 for burning, but its a pain going back and forth.

The DOS program is going to try and directly access the port (serial or parallel), which isn't possible in 2000 or XP, as they are protect by the HAL. No way around it.

Yup, you're going to have to dual boot. You have to install win9x and then install winxp/2000 as a second OS.

Or, you could obviously use another computer. Used, pentium class laptops can be had for under $300. Amazingly enough, my old Pentium166 laptop runs my scan software better than my PIII...

Well, I am using my 486 laptop for now utilizing the DOS RommasterII. However, it is too bad that XP isnt backwards compatible.

I am already running dual operating systems, but it is XP and win2000professional
I suppose I could put another drive in or partition and run 3 systems, but seems pretty screwy to have to do that.

Thanks for all the input.
regards.

If it requires nothing more than DOS, just boot from a DOS/Win95/Win98 bootdisk with whatever extras are required. (HIMEM, SMARTDRV, EMM386, etc)

That statement is not exactly right. Your thinking about the NT4 HAL.

This is a subject we just covered in XP classes. Win-2000 and XP both have support for the NT4 HAL and WDM. The WDM allows direct hardware access, thereby removing the major NT limitation of hardware compatibility and ensuring that most all hardware will work with Windows 2K/XP, if WDM drivers are produced for it.

The problem is simply that no one has yet ported that type of programmers hardware driver to Windows NT/2K/XP.

I wasn't thinking about the NT4 HAL, what I was thinking about was the fact that a DOS program, which is what we are talking about here, won't have WDM driver support built into it. And, the reason I said no way around it, is WDM is a 32bit driver model, again, since we are talking about a DOS program, you see the problem.

Yes...there may well be a way to do just that.

Go to the DOS executible file, right click it, select properties. Now select the "Compatibility" tab select to run the app in Win 95 mode fullscreen ( not in window ).

I won't swear to it...but I'd definitely try it before hanging it out to dry.

Get PartitionMagic 7.0: Install it. Add a new partion; FAT 32 or better yet FAT;

Install WIN 95 or WIN 98;

Boot to that partition and install your program. I think DOS applications can then be run from DOS by selecting it just before it boots into the windows partition, or selecting DOS from your shutdown options.

I just use a plain DOS 6.22 boot disk to boot my dual 1ghz processor super whizbanger to dos.
All my devices aren't available but I've got the CDROM drivers on the boot disk so can read CDs.
The old DOS programs run with no complaints.
I'm sure I'm not getting the benefit of dual processors and 1gb of memory but all that's not needed or used by a DOS program.

Best regards,
