The A/T in my 89 Coupe has start shifting strange, The issues are as follows.
1 - 2 shift - on light throttle, doesn't happen until 18 mph (2000 rpm)
used to change up a 10 mph
Full throttle shifts occur at 5500 rpm, used to shift at 4500 - 4800 rpm.
The fluid is not discoloured, still pale red, but has a slightly burnt smell.
the Tv cable has been adjusted in accordance with Gm guidelines, and at W.O.T there is no slack in the cable.
The TV cable isn't binding and if pulled retracts quickly.
Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this sudden change in how the transmission is shifting.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you only had the full throttle shift problem, I would say to remove the governor and see if it is sticking, or maybe just replace it. But since you are having 1-2 shift problems too, I doubt that is the case.

I take it that you did NOT try to adjust the TV adjustment first, and then these troubles started?

That burnt smell is not good at all. Sounds like some clutch packs may be toasted.
Have you ever done a tranny fluid exchange? If not, it might help, but doubtful.
Don't know about your problem, but I have a similar issue that I don't get.
My auto works perfectly if I leave it in drive. If I shift it myself and then come to a complete stop, it won't downshift either automatically or manually. It will start out then in 2nd or 3rd. I also can't downshift it from drive to other 3, and so forth. Gary:o
Just took the car out again, after rechecking the TV cable adjustment, now at WOT no upshift at all, engine went to 5600 rpm where I lifted off, and it then upshifted.
Having looked at the Service Manual, it is indicating a governor problem, what is involved in changing the governor.

Changing out the governor is very easy. You will have to put the car on stands - or at least a fatso like me does. On the driver's side near the rear of the tranny, you will see a dome housing. I think the stock ones are not black, so don't let that worry you. It has been a while so I may be foggy. As I recall you take that off by pry it off the using a large screw driver. It is the black thing on this picture, the second black thing from the rear. Not the one on the rear tail housing.
After you pry it off, a very small amount of tranny fluid will leak out. Not a lot. You just rotate the governor to pull it out. Unless yours has no teeth left, then it will pull straight out.
There is a plastic gear on the end which is usually the part that wears out. If the teeth are eaten, then a new governor should fix it right up for cheap.
If that fixes it, I would do a fluid exchange after wards.
When you get a new one, make sure you get the 'Corvette' governor, else you will no longer have the hi performance shift points.
