I have a 1990 Vert auto (L98) with 16,208 miles on it at present. I bought it 2 years ago for my retirement "fun toy". It has the anemic 2:73 gears and it is not doing it for this retired guy.
I do not want to build the engine up but want a better "punch" so to speak. Here in Ontario Canada the emisson laws are tough and with my 1990 there is NO end date...the emission laws and checks go on for ever.
At present my only choices with the D36 are 3:07 and 3:54 gearing. Is the 3:07 too close to my 2:73 or am I going to rev too high on the road with the 3:54?
With the 2:73; I rev at 1700 rpm at 60 mph. I really need all your help and expertise in this matter...what are the pros and cons of the 3:07 and 3:54 gears?Actual experience would greatly help me with the decision I am trying to make.
Thanks
Bill
Thanks for the info. It seems that going from 2:59 to 3:07; they saw a definite SOTP feel. I have the 2:73 gearing and will I feel a large change..I was hoping someone has done this already for a comparison. The 3:54 has me worried now after reading the posts as my driving is stoplite etc. and highway passing..not a DD just a fun toy on a nice day. I dont want to change the Stall Convertor.....(budget is limited).....decisions--decisions hoping for more comparisons..can only afford to do this once ($$$) and I want to make sure I choose right..3:07 or 3:54!!
Thanks for the help so far.

3.54 3.54 3.54 you will have to buy the thick set since you have a series 2 carrier you will love the difference, that is what I have in my 90 and if your in od 70 is only about 23/24 hundred rpm
I would say go with the 3.54's... My differential crashed on me about a year ago and I went from a 3.07 to a D44 with 3.45 gears. I love the difference and I am sure you will even more if you go with the 3.54's.
I had 2.73 gears. Another member was going to a Dana 44. I bought his 3.07 differential on the parts forum for $150.00 in great condition. The Dana 36 was a direct swap and it made a huge difference.
We had a very lengthy thread on this topic and I was told that 3.07s are ideal for a DD L98 with a 700R.
I had some traction problems with the 3.07s and street tires so I would not recommend a lower gear ratio.
I later installed a Vigilante TC and MT drag radials . It works well on the street and the strip.

I would like to thank all that replied. If the Vette was a DD; I would have gone with the 3:07's but since it is a casual toy I am going to go with the 3:54's(need that 1960's 2nd childhood feel ). I will need a new drive gear (15 tooth grey) and a driven gear (43 tooth purple)and a new speedo sensor---impossible to find apparently but Zip Vette has a speedo calibrator I may be able to use. To keep costs down; I will go with the thicker gears for a 2 series carrier.Im a "wrencher" and like to do things myself(last project Bosch 3 injector install) but have never tried a rear end gear install...will research it and if not comfortable will find someone to install.
Again..THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP in this matter. Made my choice comfortable.
