I tried searching for this and looked in "FAQ". I've done it a year or two ago, but forgot how. Is the procedure written down somewhere?
My car is a 91 coupe L98. I replaced the fuel pump assembly, yesterday, started the car imediately after just for a minute or so. But today it refuses to start. Cranks over rapidly but not starting. I'm thinking fuel pressure cut out or something. I can hear the fuel pump rumming when I turn the key on, and I have pressure (some, don't know how much) at the sharder valve on the fuel rail.
It isn't VATS because he can crank the engine. You need to go down the list to find out why the engine won't start. All IC engines require spark and spark at the right time, they need fuel and air and in the correct ratio, and they need cylinder compression. So......use a timing light during cranking to determine if you have spark and spark at the right time. Use a fuel pressure gauge on the shrader valve on the right fuel rail to see if you have the correct fuel pressure (35-42 psi) and see if it holds up for a long time with the ign off. Rapid pressure drop indicates possible leaky injector/s or a defective check valve in the fuel pressure regulator. Use a noid light (available at parts stores), or make one with an LED and a series 680 ohm resistor and connect to an unplugged injector socket during cranking to see if the injectors are being pulsed. Homemade light must have the LED anode connected to the injector wire with 12v on it. You can try it both connections if you want to. You can also spray starting fluid into the intake during cranking to see if the engine will run momentarily, proving you have a fuel delivery problem. If everything checks out ok and it still won't start, then measure cylinder compression on each cylinder.
I'd bet that is an old code that's been stored. Most likely has nothing to do with the current 'no-start' issue.
The OP said he cleared the code. After he tries to start it again he may want to read the codes again. If the VATS code has not returned that will rule it out.
Thanks a lot Guys! I tried the codes again after attempting to start the car a few times and the code 46 did not show up again. Still not running but you all have given me enough to spend the afternoon on.
