Why do you care? Have you done any mods or chips? Is there an issue you are trying to solve? Most importantly, do you have some sort of scanner? My Auto-X-Ray will tell me exactly what the commanded idle speed is. What yours is in the chip we don't know. Also why are you wanting to know? Do you suspect it is too high or just running erratically?

Keep one thing in mind that the factory Tachometer has a tendency to become a little inaccurate after a while, mine is about 250 RPM off. It has something to do with an electronic component. I have a digital inductive dwell/tachometer that verified this.

the tach shows 1000 RPM's but is actually running at 750.

So don't rely on your factory Tach.

If you can't rely on a tach, what is the best way to know what your idle speed is? I installed a cam in mine and the idle was erractic, but after cleaning the IAC, it has become a lot steadier.

RLG is entirely correct

95 6 spd my tach shows 2500 rpm but it is actually 2237 as noted by state inspection paper readout

At that point, all bets are off. You need to have the chip reprogrammed for that cam and they will set the idle there. My command idle is 800-900

Specs are +/- 50 rpms from Targeted in Drive (Auto); +/- 100 rpms in Park/Neutral (Auto/Stick). You need to scan it to find out if it's right.

Actually, ASSUMING the chip is programmed right and the timing is set right and no other issues are present, I set the IAC by the counts. I get it warm and in closed loop first. Hook up scanner and see what the IAC counts are. Adjust throttle position screw till I get 15-20 counts. Set TPS (some can and some cannot be set. I hogged mine out so it can be set), clear codes and go on my merry way.
