This should be easy, one bolt, pull out old , replace with new. After 21 years I guess it didn't want to give it up. I had the diff changed ( too difficult with only limited use of my left hand ) so now I have to change the speedo gear. Is there a trick to get the seal to break so I don't destroy the housing?

They can be tight pull straight out....the seals are O rings. Take your time go slow ( I too have limited use of my "right" hand which has been smashed, crushed, cut).
If your looking to change the speedo gears to accomodate a new differential gear ratio you'll want to remove the transmission's tailshaft extension housing and change the gear on the tranny's output shaft as well.

Is the change of the gear inside the tail shaft necessary for speed accuracy or just to match new to new?. This is a dirt driveway project and I don't want to spend too much time in the wet dirt under jackstands.

I hear you..I've spent so much time on my back under my car I feel like a ***** sometimes. From what I've done the gears need to be changed in sets if you changing the rear gears..the speedo teeth need to match the new setup....and gears tend to wear together. Figure out what you need then make sure you install the new speedo gear where the old one was installed...other than that it is pretty straight forward. If the gears in the rear are going to be the same leave it alone.
