I can't seem to locate a water leak (beneath/behind?) the waterpump on a 94. Sometimes there is coolant on the floor, and sometimes not. I've searched with lights, mirriors, brail and can not locate the exact area of the leak. It even feels dry at the back of the pump. Do these things have a hidden weep hole? If the pump is going, how can you tell without removing it? The car only has 17000 mi. and I can't believe the pump is shot. :mad
Yes,there is a weep hole but you should be able to feel moisture behind the pump at least I did.mine wasn't consistant either took out my optic before i got wise to it!!
My cousins 97 camaro had a similar leak rate & location,it had a weep hole on the underneathside.
You dont want that optispark to get wet.
Cars that sit alot (low milers like yours) the seals go out.
Get it hot, turn it off & look & listen for steam.
I think you can rebuid it yourself. His looked like an o-ring was all it needed.
Tighten your hoses.
Hey workin on em is half the fun. :jester
My 84 did the same thing for a year or so until I got the energy and abition to change the pump.
Sometime it wouldn't leak for weeks then it would leak on the floor.
Never much but a just enough to tell you it needed help.
The more I drove it the less it leaked. The seal would seat better with driving and the hot and cold cycling.
My 91 which sits for weeks is doing the same thing.
One hint: if you've got a small cooling system leak, DON'T PUT WATER WETTER in the system.
The small leak WILL turn into a big leak the first time you drive the car.
It (water wetter) affects the cohesion of the water and it will come out of there like heck. (This was what really forced the issue on my 84 Vette.)
Nothing more than a simple water pump but it's a $itch to change on a L-98
C4.
I had to remove:
"Serpent" Belt
Alternator
AIR Pump
Power Steering Pump
Belt Tensioner
AC Compressor
Everything on the front of the engine has to be gotten out of the way.
It is the SHORT style pump and a REVERSE ROTATION pump.
Don't put a regular SB Chevy pump on there, it won't work.
Give yourself a good weekend to get it done if you plan on doing it yourself.
Take a couple of Prozacs before you start, you'll need them!! :) :)
This has not been a simple seek and repair situation. The car is playing hide and seek games with me. I have searched after getting the engine hot many times. All hoses and connections are dry, at least when being checked. After driving the car, I check it almost every time with no luck of finding the location of the leak. The next time I back the car out there is a five inch spot on the floor directly under the pump. The search continues.
Hey workin on em is half the fun. :jester
I think I have had fun once before, and this doesn't sound fun.
I'm not sure if this applies to the '94 but I had a similar leak on my '86. Turned out to be a 6" U shaped hose at the base of the front of the throttle body. The coolant would leak down the front of the engine and down the water pump giving the impression that the coolant was coming out the weep hole. Drove me nuts for months :mad
Ok, the hide and seek game is finally over. After a full out attempt and a whole day to locate the leak, I found it.
Getting the car hot several different times during the day did not produce a drop, justs burns on the hands and arms. After my last 30 min. trip at 8:00 pm I checked everything again, still no sign of a leak. Just before bed, two and a half hours later I went out to checked it over one last time. She was wet at the bottom of the pump and I assume it's leaking from the weep hole. What's funny is this morning the damn thing was dry as a bone. Sneaky SOB.
