I noticed that when I read my bill for brake service, the front and rear bearings were repacked. I looked at the 94 corvette repair manual and no mention of repacking the bearings. Instead it mentions sealed bearings. I wonder if I was charged for something that was not possible. The charges were .5 hours per axle. Comments???

repeat after me: "Don't take my car to this garage again".
you are absolutly correct. the bearings are sealed, and do not permit repacking.
This is how I would do it. Monday morning, bring the bill back to the service center. Ask them to elaborate on "repacking". if they say, "yes, we repacked them.", ask them, "how? They are sealed."
this shop sounds like a rip-off joint to me... considering your prior thread about the alignment.
The only ligitimate explaination I can see for this appearing on your invoice, is if it was a standard, computer generated item. It could be that when the billing person clicks on operation "XYZ", that repacking is listed, because it SHOULD be a part of a brake service on a car with packable bearings. The Corvette isn't the only car with sealed wheel bearings. Either this place is trying to get a little deeper into your pocket, or they need a more sophisticated computer program. Either way make sure you didn't/don't pay for a phantom service. The manner in which they handle your inquiry, would govern whether I ever went back to them or not. Obviously, YOU didn't know for sure, because you looked it up, and asked here on the Forum. GOOD CONSUMERISM. Keep up 'em honest.
After checking with the GM area service rep, The Chev customer service rep, 3 Chevy dealers and a Corvette specialty shop, all answers were the same. The bearings are sealed and cannot be repacked. I went back to the dealer and told him what I found to be true. He said he wanted to talk to thje tech who was at lunch. The service rep said he would call me later and he did within the hour. He said I was right and the tech had only smeared some grease on the shaft stub area or somewhere and indeed did not repack any bearings. He said he will credit my account for the charges. No argument or raised voices. My complaint was properly handled and was thanked for bringing this to his attention.
The dealer is near my work and after the dealer "cleaned house" about 2 years ago, this has been my only complaint.
VERY interesting! So even the service rep didn't know, either. As the service rep, I would have wanted to talk to the mechanic, too, but I would have written the credit on the spot. At least they didn't cause you a hassle. All's well that ends well...I guess. Good catch!
