What about one of those power packs? It comes with an air foil, chip, low temp thermostat, plug wires, plugs, K&N, fuel pressure regulator. I think it said its good for 30-40 HP.

It depends on what you want the car to do.There are many things that will increase performance.
Gears are a good start and will enhance in future upgrades.Select them according to your driving habits.
1.6 rockers is a few ponies but I would'nt do that without replacing valve springs.
Since you have an auto a shift kit and or a higher stall converter is an option.
Long tube headers is an option also.
You could have it dyno tuned and may pick up some power there as well.If you plan on any other engine mods do them before the tune.
If you want stock driveability and power put some ported heads(with 1.6 rockers)or aftermarket heads on,have it tuned, and rock on.
Its simple I waited and bought a great deal d44, driveshaft and c beam for less than that D36 costs, it was about 2 hours away, so I drove and picked it up. I do my own work so no labor. Original d36 and supporting parts are stored in case I sell my vette and they will get pulled prior to advertising......then I can recoup my money on the d44
When I did my D36 to D44 conversion I installed Polybushings at same time. The difference in amount of work required to change pumkin vice entire rear is minimal.. IE probably less than an hour difference. If you plan on changing bushings at same time there is no time difference.
My grandpa once told me "The more 100 doller bills you throw at it, the faster it will go". Had 6k in just my motor for my old S-10's 350. Couldnt hold a tranny for crap. lol
I'd start saving for a heads and cam package over anything else. Nitrous is the best bang for the buck. It's much cheaper but it will cost you ever time you refill the bottle. Expect to pay closer to $1k for a full kit with all the saftey features and mail order tune. 100-150hp guaranteed.
You may want to stick with the 3.07 if you have a daily driver. A higher stall would be a better option first, IMO. Be prepared for less traction off the line which will require stickier tires. Your gas mileage will also be affected some.
