I have two squeeling noises coming from my car (85 auto). The first is only at start up when cold at the front of the engine (pretty loud). I checked for bolts backing out and all is good. Sounds like it's coming from around the water pump area. Removed the belt and spun the accessories & tensioner and no sounds. It goes away when it warms up, I'm getting a new belt even though this one is only 1 yr old.
The second squeel is coming from the rear/under the car. It only happen when I'm going 38-42 mph in any gear. Usually when I'm coasting it will come and go but if I keep it at 40 mph it will continue. I've replaced the u-joints and shafts 9 months ago, wheel bearings 1 year ago. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
If you lost a belt in a year my guess would be one of two things though could be more..
Condition of pulleys are the clean and no oil on them second the tensioner is shot. I am assuming you bought a quality belt of the correct length.
A spun harmonic balancer can cause an intermittant squeal at the front of the engine.
When my harmonic balancer went, it would squeal intermittantly. I took some photos of the old and new one off the car. You can see the pics here if you are interested:
Please check for this with the engine OFF! If your balancer has failed, you should not drive/run the car until it is replaced.
As a side note, the new balancer let me set my ignition timing properly, so the car idled much better. The Forum here talked me through the balancer replacement. This place rocks!
Hmmm never thought about the balancer. Will check it's condition today as well as install my new belt (88-1/8" dia) and will post the results. Still trying to figure out the rear noise.
