Ever since hearing that a lot of the auto C4's came stock with 2.59 gearing I decided to call a buddy at my local chevy store and had him run the VIN... Mine has 3.07s!
You could of drove it on the highway (60mph) and easily found out what gears it had.
That sounds easy, but it's not done yet. I took it out this weekend, but w/o the upper fender shields to complete the wheel well its not safe at 60mph. It feels like you're hydroplaning due to the excessive wind pressure pushing up from underneath the hood. Needless to say that my time spent @ 60mph+ was very limited and my concern wasn't with gearing at the time.
Either way, I'm still happy about it because 3.07 gearing should keep me satisfied for awhile until I start hitting the hp numbers I'd like to get to.... For now though, finishing the body work and getting all the little kinks worked out is my main focus.
My 89 had the 3:07 gear ratio which would light up the rear tires effortlessly (scary in the rain). My 91 has the 2:59 gear ratio which is not as quick on take off but, gets a lot better gas mileage (3:07=16.8 mpg combined city/highway 2:59=19.7 mpg combined city/highway) and is Great when the transmission downshifts on the highway!
I would rather find out I had 2.59's and realize my car can be even much better with better gears, now you know unless you go to 3.54 or 3.75 you are are you are.
glad you lucked out.
My 92 had the G44/G92 codes for performance 3.07 axle, and it always averaged around 22-23 mpg, but now with an upgraded camshaft and 3.73 gears, it only gets 20-21 mpg. That's combined, but probably 70% highway.
As was mentioned, the way to find your Gear Ratio in an automatic is to drive at 60 mph. The reason for driving at 60mph is that your gearing (3rd gear) should be at 1:1 at that speed. So driving at 60mph you would be at 2700 rpms if you had 2.70 gears or 2590 rpms for 2.59 gears.
At 60 MPH my RPMs are no where near 2500. I'm turning about 1700 RPMs with my '92 auto Vette.
Bernie
3rd gear because of the 1:1 ratio.
Gear ratios on these units were 3.06 1st gear, 1.63 2nd gear, 1.00 3rd gear, .070 4th gear.
If you do the estimated math using your 1700rpm and the 0.70 ratio of fourth then you get around 2429rpm. So with the rough estimation of your 1700rpm to begin with you are probably running the 2.59 gears because it should come up at 1813. Make sense.
If you were running the 3.07 gears then in fourth gear it should be around 2149. A good amount of difference as you can see. Just imagine what it would be like with 3.54 gears.

my '92 a/t with 2.59's is turning 1300 rpm at 157 mph
Sorry, had to throw the flag on this one. Must be a typo on the RPM or the MPH, but those numbers don't add up unless you've got about a .2:1 overdrive...
