i really like the idea of side pipes on a c4. does anyone know whats involved to do this? just a set of pipes and custom bent tubing? any pics would be good. my exhaust now is burning the rear bumper and is time for a new more unrestrictive one anyway
i emailed that company anyway to see, but if anybody has done this let me know, id really like to talk to you and see what you did,and if removing the cats is what it takes i have no problem with that, i heard that they were way to restrictive anyways

There was one guy who did a DIY solution within the past year. He had an L88 (C3) hood grafted to his C4 IIRC. It might have been Iroc57 but cannot remember for sure. Do a search in C4Tech and C4General for "sidepipes". Look around end of last year or beginning of this year.
Don't let the guy at Lawrence-Keech lead you on. I'd be shocked to see 'em make a set again. It's been over 6yrs out-of-production.
I bought my set used. There may have been a set in the 4sale section that didn't get sold this year too.
There isnt any other option, the engine sits back too far to make it workable and keep the cats.
Some folks have gone straight out and dump down right after the diff.
I custom made my own side pipes for my 91. I still have all three stock cats and it required some mandrel bends from the "Y" connector. As you mentioned, the "Side Effects" kit is no longer available. I bought some aftermarket C2 side pipe covers and modified them to fit the C4. Aside from the custom work, I did notice nice gains with the exhaust. I eliminated the mufflers, so the only thing that makes the exhaust somewhat quiet are the cats. It has a nice deep rumble and drone from the interior. Sorry I don't have any pics of the actual exhaust, but you get the idea.

One day you need to get it up in the air and show us how you routed those pipes.
Damn that looks sweet!
Thank you both for the nice compliments! I had fun with the project and it turned out better than I actually anticipated. With the help from my buddies at the muffler shop, they really pulled it off. The mandel bends were a must for the tight bends and clearances. I will definitely take some pics of it underside when I can free up some time. Jorge
that helps a bit, thanks. are the actual pipes off a c3 or something? or are those custom too, and did you have to modify the mounting points? but yea, my confidence went way up seeing it done, i'll get going on it within the next month or so when i get some cash
For older cars that dont need cats (I think I will do this when mine no longer needs an inspection) I would modify a set of headers to come out the side like the old cars, that way you have 4 1 3/4" tubes under the car instead of 1 3" tube, and then the tubes collect into one on the outside like the older Vettes. More ground clearance.
Looks pretty I thought about doing that myself, even measured up a Mid-years exhaust once.
Thank you!

The exhaust is stock from the exhaust manifolds to the third center cat. The shop had to make a new "Y" pipe connector and go out the sides, forward a bit and then back to the side exits in order to clear everything. The mandrel bends helped quite a bit to achieve this because everything is tight underneath. Sorry I don't have any pics of the bare exhaust. But to shed some light, the exhaust does not nun along the exhaust cover like the C2 and C3s. All munting was also custom but utilizing existing bolts and locations. I'll try to post some up later in the week.

Here is a small sound clip. Sorry the audio is a little distorted. I'll get some better sound clips later. This was a pre-dyno run. A friend a mine is a college automotive professor and he was just trying out his new dyno toy. We didn't make any serious pulls because the dyno was acting up, but I at least wanted to share what the exhaust sounds like with the setup. Thanks you for viewing, Jorge

Have you thought about notching the front of the covers so you could move it up to cover the bolt holes and gain a little ground clearance?
Never really thought of it, but I see what you mean. I just took the cover as is an placed it the way it came. To be honest, ground clearance isn't really an issue. I hit the exhaust from time to time if there is a bump in the road. I can't really do much about that since everything is tucked up tightly. Maybe oval tubing would give me an inch or so of clearance.
ok, sweet, one more question if i may ask, this may be dumb, but does the exhaust cover hold the pipe up, or are there brackets on the back side of the pipe?
i am not seeing the draw to having these. they look outof place on these cars. they follow no lines. i think the only reason they fit so well on the c2's and 3's is the ground clearnce and these filled the gap which isn't the case on these cars. they already look low in that area.

Thank you for asking. Not a dumb question at all. The cover is just that. A cover. The exhaust is supported underneath with the stock hanger at the third cat and then there are two custom made hangers near the side exits.

I was not sure at first for the very reason you just stated. But after seeing it in person, I would have to respectfully disagree with you. It's one of those you either like it or hate it things. I for one value everyone's opinion. If you look at the C2s and C3s it's not any different than on my C4. Both with the side pipes make the car seem lower than it really is. Sure the C2 and C3 came with factory side pipes whereas the C4s did not. This is why some people don't take to well to the idea. I have taken the car to several shows and most people are receptive to the idea and actually compliment the fabrication.
