The gears are keyed. There is only one way they fit together smoothly. Look closely at every tooth and you will see a void on one and a matching fill on the other.

However if you are an impatient sort you can force it on incorrectly. The key word in the above post is smoothly
I pulled the old opti off and am waiting for new opti to arrive, well I was looking at it and then for some reason I turned the the rotor.
Now I need to figure out how to realign the opti, there are not ant timing marks, so how do you go about setting the timing?
Thanks!!
I didnt mark mine or set it to a certain way before removing it. What I did was put the notch on the teeth on the little shaft straight up, then took the notch on the opti with the same shaft up and slowly matched it all up. It will go together without any effort what soever, so dont force it.

Hope your right, I looked at the old opti and I don't see a void. I thought only the 95-96 had the key?
Thanks for the pic, I see it now. I was looking for a actual key.
I'm glad you asked for help and eventually got your answer.
One tip that seems obvious only after the fact is to test start the engine before you reinstall the water pump and after you've reinstalled the crank pulley with a smack of anti-sieze. Only start the car then shut it off if it starts. A couple of seconds running with no water pump is neither here nor there. However, you do want to be sure of spark before you complete final assembly.
Got the new opti in and car runs good, but the drivers side has a miss. When I replaced the old wires(which is the reason for the opti dying) it did not miss.
So could a new opti have ne side that is bad or did I screw up and not connect the wires securely?
How do you know which side its coming from? Sounds like a wire is either crossed or not plugged in completely. If you wanna take a trek out to Deland we could take a look at it on Sunday.
Double check that you have your spark plug wires in the right places. I had the same problem after replacing my opti and thought I messed up until I checked my wires.
Something else to consider is possibly a cracked spark plug. With the limited working space on these engines, it is easy to accidently crack a plug, especially if the wires were fused on them. Might want to take a look at that too.
